Ivory / Wintana
05:29
|
|||
Our windows are broken (onze ramen zijn gebroken)
but we keep our doors carefully locked (potdicht).
I keep to myself; I’m in awe.
Stuck in our rut the fury's unspoken (een onbenoemde furie).
I admire in silence, in awe.
No patience for love.
You're all I see but all you see is ivory.
A habit of egg shells
under my feet.
All you see is ivory,
but that's not the shade of my tower
Joshua:
We waving from a distance.
The safety of our warm flats.
What's her name, what's her face?
We could be more than strangers.
I keep to myself.
I keep to myself.
I keep to myself.
I keep to myself.
You're all I see but all you see is ivory.
A habit of egg shells
under my feet.
All you see is ivory,
but that's not the shade of my tower
Wintana ways,
wintana ways:
Effortless sways.
Ivory, not here;
Ivory's not me.

Dunes
04:44
|
|||
The way we wake today beside the dunes:
Wave after wave that the low horizon’s losing.
There’s a song in the way the first light moves,
When the golden dawn from the ocean
first rolls over your eyes…
And the world is a world of notch and groove,
In the gold and blue of a turning timeless music.
It’s the way that we learn to live in tune,
Wake with the sand as bed
and you let the dunes roll over your life…
It’s only life;
It’s not for clinging to.
The morning shines for the people who are singing to it.
I found my light
In the shade of the waving and moving sand,
And the dunes are given for dancing.
Look at this life of sand and sea:
This life’s a shining light.
Dunes never move by the beat;
Look at this life of fantasy.
This life’s a trick of the light;
Waves never fall for the beat.
This life is me and you.
Who’s wrong if we’re all right?
Sand never shifts out of tune
Giving in to the dunes.
He’s a knife in the butter of the day.
He’s a dance in the shade and a nap in the sun he ran from.
Calm is something you can’t chase;
He tells me now he’s looked away
He thinks he’s found the light.
It’s only life:
It’s ours for singing to.
The morning shines with what the people are bringing to it.
I found my light
in the way of the waving and moving sand,
And the dunes are given to dancing…
Look at this life of sand and sea.
This life’s a shining light;
Dunes never move out of beat.
Look at this life of fantasy:
This life’s a trick of the light.
Waves never break for the beat:
This life is you and me.
What’s left if they’re all right?
Sand never shifts out of key –
This life is me and you:
Who’s wrong if we’re all right?
The sun never rises too soon,
Giving into the dunes.

In Maelstrom
03:28
|
|||
Trust my instincts; trust in us.
The sky here looks uneasy
But it will be brighter than the way it was.
There’s calm where lips meet maelstrom ears.
It’s the trust that we place in a kiss defeats
the danger in our sinking fears.
I know: I’m stormy water.
My heart’s no solid place.
But we’ve got feet like gods:
Don’t be afraid.
Hold my hopes high above these waves;
Hold me close and close my eyes
To all the worry standing in our way –
And I won’t weigh you down to the wine-dark sea.
All I want is the floating lightness found
When you walk with me.
I know I’m stormy water.
We’re no solid place;
But we’ve got feet like gods, boy.
Don’t be afraid

Neon & Lace
03:42
|
|||
It doesn’t get dark anymore;
It keeps me awake.
I walk ‘til the storefronts admit they’ve lost track
Of early and late;
The streets are an ocean of sun,
And wouldn’t lead home.
The closest I’ve come to a shadow or sign
Is neon alone;
The rest is a colorless thought.
The corners go blind.
I hadn’t been told I could get only get lost
In all of this light;
And summer won’t care if I’m lost;
He wants me to stay.
And all of those sunsets I thought that I’d seen
Were neon and lace.
If life was an open road once
Then the past is a place;
But how can we find our way back where we were
If we’re trapped in our ways –
The sun hasn’t set for me for days.
The bars never close.
And all the tomorrows I think I see dawning
Are neon alone;
I know where I left who I was -
It’s the obvious place.
All of this looking and all I can see
Is neon and lace.

City No More
04:34
|
|||
Used to be so in love with all this:
History, all this water under the bridge.
Little appartments, bookshops, markets;
it’s all the same, but now it’s almost as if
The city ain’t mine no more,
No it ain’t no it ain’t,
City ain’t mine no more
No it ain’t no it ain’t.
Summer, rooftop, french toast, breakfast
Movies, new shirt, i think you should try it on.
Tv, dinner, under a blanket;
little moments, water under the bridge
Now you ain’t mine no more,
No you ain’t, no you ain’t.
The city ain’t mine no more
No it ain’t, no it ain’t.
This used to be my home.
This used to be my own.
You used to feel the same.
Now it ain’t the same at all…
Used to be so in love with all this:
History, all this water under the bridge.

Surely
04:48
|
|||
Love lives.
No song when the spirit is mute;
No tune after breaking in two.
Sweet tones I remember not,
Love accents are soon forgot
Love lives.
If ever two were one;
The echoes linger on.
It follows, it follows me.

Sepia
03:27
|
|||
Sepia is seeping
Through my clouds;
All my oranges and greens
Washing out…
Where your broken body’s sleeping,
Uninspired,
All the light I should be seeing
Melts from sight…
All your smiles
Seem to fade to grey:
I am capturing myself
In your underexposed days…
Brighter colors.
Thinner hues.
I wash the world out for you.
I need turquoise…
I need pink…
Oversaturation pouring
Into my winter life like spring –
All your smiles
Seem to fade to grey.
I am capturing myself
In your underexposed gaze…
Brighter colors.
Thinner hues.
I wash the world out for you.

Shoeless
04:00
|
|||
Give me a coat –
Find me a coat. I’m cold.
If you push me outside,
Take some ownership of it.
You told me you knew how to care for a heart:
This isn’t the way two caring people part.
How we’d run through rain
On summer days:
That’s how anyone would want this.
I don’t mind pain in its proper place,
Like heartbreak in Paris.
You think that I’m fool enough
To believe you just suddenly had to go?
It’s your kind of cruel
To know you’d leave me shoeless in snow.
We’ve been caught in the rain
As the cold fronts chase us –
That’s how anyone would want this to end.
I don’t mind pain in its proper place;
Even goodbyes belong to friends.
You think that I’m fool enough
To believe you just suddenly had to go?
It’s your kind of cruel
To have known you’d leave me shoeless in snow.

Ridge Line
04:04
|
|||
I had my hopes:
They were simple and few.
I wanted to live in the shade with you.
I wanted to have enough for two;
I wanted to sleep till our dreams were through…
I guess my dreams were all too small, though.
I’m done with wanting what I need.
My bags are packed for where the stars go,
Where the fast lives lead.
I’m driving up, I’m driving on
To where the river meets the ridge line.
Having dreams in the dark’s enough
If you never see the light.
I’m driving up, I’m driving on
To where the river meets the ridge line;
I burnt my ships so I can’t give up
Until the edges of the map are mine.
We were moss in the crook of the wood:
If the world couldn’t last – we could.
I guess my dreams were all too small, though.
I’m done with wanting what I need.
My bags are packed for where the stars go,
Where the fast lives lead…

Lilac Morning
07:14
|
|||
I was a child in a simpler time:
My magic was the grass and the green sunshine.
But what could match this wonder, oh,
I wonder, unborn child of mine?
My mother was a warrior and she made me strong;
My father was a saint taught me right from wrong.
But law now sins and lauds defeat –
With my books burned, what can you learn from me?
If all that you’ve got are heartless toys,
How can you grow to a wise strong boy?
I know you’ll be strong and wise, my girl,
But how can you bloom in a rootless world?
Why would I burden this hopeless time
With one more soul earth can’t provide for?
Why would we choose, though, to deny
Your eyes the sight of the morning lilac?
I’ll hold you close in the night –
I’ll sooth your cries.
I’ll weave your perfect hands in mine –
Dry your crying eyes.
How could we live and leave you lifeless
In eternal lands of silence?
Would an age unkind and violent
Abide me raise you sweet, and kind?
All I can dream for you, I wish for you.
All I can bring for you, I’ll give to you.
All that our hands can do, we’ll make for you.
All that this land could lose, we’ll save for you…
Who would want to bring new life
Into a world that was only silence?
How could we deny new eyes
The dewy sight of the morning lilac?
And if you come, we’ll sew for you
Your baby clothes of pink and blue.
And if you stay in hopeful silence,
We’ll see you in the morning lilacs…
It’s screens, machines and shrinking forests,
Our private sins, our public sores,
It’s some three billion urban poor:
What could another soul be for?
But oh, my child if you’re born.
We’ll teach you how to love the dawn –
Take your hand and go exploring,
Find a sky for you to soar in,
Toss you from the peaks and shores,
And teach you how to hear the chorus
Of the gifts we brought you for:
The twilight rose and the lilac morning.
